On a slab home it is usually the answer that leaves your floor intact, takes the bad run permanently out of service, and costs less than cutting concrete to fix one inch of it.

What Rerouting Is, and Why It Exists

A line under a slab is in the worst possible place for a repair: encased in concrete, under whatever flooring you chose, and reachable only by removing both. Rerouting takes the problem out of that situation entirely.

Capped at both ends and left in place. Abandoned pipe under a slab does no harm there, taking it out would mean the excavation we are avoiding.

A new path is planned
Through walls, an attic, a ceiling void, or along a garage wall. The route is chosen for the fewest openings and the shortest run, and you see it before we start.

The new line goes in
Usually PEX, because it bends through framing with far fewer joints, and every joint is a future failure point you did not have to have.

At the manifold or supply end, and at the fixtures it feeds.

Worth knowing The line that decides it is usually not the plumbing. It is what sits on top of the slab. A spot repair under a vinyl floor in a garage is cheap and sensible; the identical repair under a set of imported tiles that are no longer made is a very different conversation.

The comparison worth doing

Two or more reroutes in the same house start to approach the cost of a repipe, and a repipe replaces everything rather than one run at a time. If you are on your second reroute, ask for both numbers. We would rather quote you a repipe you were expecting than a third reroute you resent.

What Gets Opened, and What Does Not

This is the question everyone asks and few get a straight answer to.

Openings are sized for the work rather than for convenience, and we walk the route with you before anything is cut so there are no surprises about where holes appear. A reroute through an attic in a single-storey house often means very few openings at all.

Which Lines Get Rerouted

Not every pipe in a house is a candidate. Rerouting works on pressurised supply lines, and the reason is gravity.

The drain rows catch people out. A supply line works under pressure and can be routed uphill without complaint; a drain relies on falling and cannot. If your problem is a drain under the slab, the honest answer is a different method. See sewer line repair.

How Long the New Line Lasts

A fair question, and one that deserves something better than a marketing number.

  • The new line is new pipe in an accessible place, which is the two things the old one was not
  • PEX in a wall is not exposed to the conditions that killed the slab line — no concrete abrasion, no soil movement, no burial
  • Fewer joints than the run it replaced, because it bends rather than needing fittings at corners
  • It can be reached again without excavation, which is worth as much as the material is
  • What it does not fix is water pressure. If the house runs at 90 psi, correct that too — otherwise the next weak point is simply somewhere else

Nobody can tell you a number of years and mean it. What can be said honestly is that the specific conditions that caused this failure are no longer acting on the line that replaced it, and that if it ever does need attention, reaching it is a drywall job rather than a concrete one.

Is Abandoned Pipe Under the Slab a Problem?

It is the most common worry about this method and the answer is no, with a reason rather than a reassurance.

  • The abandoned section is capped at both ends, so nothing flows into it
  • It is not under pressure, so it cannot leak
  • Copper left in concrete is inert. It has been sitting there for decades already
  • Removing it would mean excavating the slab, which is the entire cost we are avoiding
  • It is disclosed. It appears on the written record of the work, which matters if you sell

The one thing worth doing is keeping the paperwork. A future plumber, inspector or buyer benefits enormously from knowing a reroute was done and which run it replaced, and that record is part of what you get.

What This Site Is About, and What Belongs to Another Trade

We are licensed and insured plumbers, and this site is about leaks — finding the ones you cannot see and repairing them properly. Roughly half of what looks like a plumbing leak turns out not to be one, so the boundary is worth stating plainly.

Roof leaks are a roofer. Water under an air handler is an HVAC technician clearing a condensate drain. Water under an appliance is appliance repair. Drying, restoration and mold are separate trades again, and gas line repair is SoCalGas or a licensed gas fitter. We detect gas leaks, we do not repair gas lines.

PEX or Copper for the New Line

PEX
Flexible, so it turns corners without a fitting, which means far fewer joints inside walls where you would never see one fail. It does not scale or corrode the way copper does in hard water, and it is what makes routing through existing framing practical.
Copper
Rigid, familiar, and the right answer for exposed runs and for some tie-ins where matching the existing material is simply cleaner. It costs more and takes longer to install through framing.
