The Bucket Test

The bucket test compares how much water your pool loses against how much a bucket of standing water loses over the same period, which helps you tell a real leak apart from ordinary evaporation.

Fill a bucket about three-quarters full with pool water and set it on a pool step so the water level inside the bucket sits at roughly the same level as the pool outside it.

Mark the water line inside the bucket and the water line of the pool itself, using tape or a marker, right at the surface of each.
