A spa attached to a pool has its own plumbing, its own fittings and often its own heater, which means it can lose water while the pool beside it holds perfectly. When it loses water tells you most of what you need: running or off, and how far down it stops.

Worth knowing The level it stops at is the single most useful observation you can make. A spa that empties to just below the jets is telling you the loss is at a jet fitting; one that stops just below the tile line is telling you it is at the tile or the expansion joint. Mark the level and watch where it settles.

Rule Out Evaporation First

A heated spa loses water to evaporation faster than a pool does, because warm water evaporates faster and a spa has more surface area relative to its volume. Uncovered and heated, that can look like a leak.

  • Run the bucket test, weighted bucket on a step, water inside level with the water outside, both marked, 24 hours
  • Both dropped the same: evaporation. Spa dropped more: the difference is your leak
  • Do it with the heater on your normal schedule, not off, or the test does not represent normal conditions
  • Repeat it once with the pump running and once with it off. That comparison is the diagnosis in the table above
  • A cover changes the result dramatically, which is itself informative

Full bucket test method is on how to find a pool leak. For an uncovered pool, roughly a quarter of an inch a day is normal evaporation here: a heated spa will exceed that, and a cover will cut it sharply.

Where Spas Actually Leak

Jet fittings
A spa has far more penetrations through its shell than a pool does, and each one is a joint. Jets, air injectors and the blower line all pass through the wall, and any of them can weep.
The spillway
Where a raised spa overflows into the pool. The seal at that transition is a common failure point and it produces a very specific signature: the spa drops to just below the spillway and stops.
Suction and pressure lines
Buried between the spa and the equipment pad. Which side is leaking is exactly what the pump-on versus pump-off test tells you.
The heater and equipment pad
Unions, the heater itself, valves and the plumbing between them. This is the easiest place to check and it is the answer more often than people expect, look before assuming anything buried.

Check the Equipment Pad Before Anything Else

Look at it while the system is running
Wet ground under a union, a drip from a heater connection, a weeping valve stem. Most of it is visible if you stand there and watch.

Then look at it with the system off
Some leaks only show under pressure, some only when it drops. Two looks, two results.

Check the backwash and waste line
A multiport valve that does not seat sends water continuously to waste, which looks exactly like a leak and is not one.

Check the heater specifically
Heat exchangers fail, and a spa heater works harder than a pool heater for its size.

Look for staining and mineral deposits
A slow leak leaves a white or rusty trail long before it makes a puddle.

Ten minutes at the pad rules out or finds a meaningful share of spa losses, and it is the cheapest thing on this page. It costs nothing but attention.

Things That Look Like a Leak and Are Not

Before assuming the shell or the plumbing, work through these. Between them they explain a good share of the calls, and every one of them costs nothing to check.

The auto-fill row catches people out repeatedly. A spa that has quietly been topped up for years does not appear to lose water at all, and the day the auto-fill fails, a long-standing slow leak looks like a brand-new one. If you have an auto-fill, check it is working before concluding anything about when this started.

What Waiting Costs

  • Water, continuously, at whatever your rate is
  • Chemicals, because every gallon replaced dilutes what you have balanced
  • Heating, and on a spa this is the big one. You are paying to warm water that leaves
  • The ground and structure around a raised spa, which softens as it stays saturated
  • The equipment, if the level drops below a suction point and the pump runs dry

The pump row is the urgent one. A pump that loses prime and keeps running can be damaged in a single afternoon, and it turns a plumbing repair into a plumbing repair plus a pump. If the level is dropping toward a suction fitting, turn the system off.

What This Site Is About, and What Belongs to Another Trade

We are licensed and insured plumbers, and this site is about leaks, finding the ones you cannot see and repairing them properly. Roughly half of what looks like a plumbing leak turns out not to be one, so the boundary is worth stating plainly.

Roof leaks are a roofer. Water under an air handler is an HVAC technician clearing a condensate drain. Water under an appliance is appliance repair. Drying, restoration and mold are separate trades again, and gas line repair is SoCalGas or a licensed gas fitter. We detect gas leaks, we do not repair gas lines.
